Targeted Imaging for Fetal Anomalies (TIFFA) Scan is done as a part of routine prenatal care, between 18-23 weeks of pregnancy, to rule out structural and chromosomal abnormalities in the growing fetus.

About TIFFA Scan

This scan is usually done between 18-23 weeks. A detailed study of the fetus is done during this scan where each part of the fetus imaged. It is also called a second-trimester scan, or anomaly scan.

During the scan, the doctor places the ultrasound probe with some gel on it on the abdomen to see the fetus. No pain will be there.

The age of the fetus will be determined, following which blood flow to the uterus will be assessed.

Then the entire fetus is scanned from head to toe, including the brain, spinal column, face heart, lungs, stomach, kidneys, urinary bladder, and limbs.

If all is well the doctor will show you your baby.

In case any abnormality is detected, the significance will be discussed by your obstetrician and if needed you will be referred to other specialists for counseling or further evaluation.
